For this one, it was my son Sven.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen you've got young children who are just learning how to put sentences together, you start to become aware of how often you use the word love. Saying \"I LOVE PIZZA!\" but then telling your 2-year old you love them too is a bit hard for them to understand - are they only as important to you as your pizza? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs funny as it sounds, it wasn't until this actually happened to me that I realized how important it was to tell others we love them. On a daily basis, I'll ask Sven \"Did you know daddy loves you?\" His response of \"yeah I know\" stayed the same until just a few days ago. We were driving home and his response was a bit different: \"What does that mean? What is love?\" \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI explained to him that love means you care about someone very very much - they're on your mind in your heart. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI looked in the rearview mirror as I was telling him this. His response was one I'll never forget. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"I love\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eyou\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edad.\" \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNow this isn't the first time he's said that to me, but it was the first time he said it knowing what it really meant. My heart was officially melting. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat's what this ZOX is all about: It's helping to define what love is before reminding someone how much you care. For some of you, it's a conversation you've never had - that's a serious gift for someone who really needs to hear it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor me, I've realized that it only was only after I defined what love is that it helped show Sven just how important he was to me. I was angry and felt wronged by many things that happened in my childhood.  My anxiety was at an all time high because I would let these things run wild in my mind and affect my daily decisions and attitude towards life. At times it still happens but I always try to remind myself it’s not doing any good to worry because nothing productive is ever accomplished with worry.  I had a bad mindset that only contributed to depression by focusing on the negative.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eLife isn’t always easy but if we are choosing to learn from hard times we allow ourselves to consciously make the decision to forgive others and focus on the many things that bring us joy.  Forgiveness takes the weight of worry off of your shoulders. It doesn't mean what happened was right or that we have to forget, it simply means you have decided to choose Joy over, worry, anxiety, stress and negativity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBecause in the end you are taking control of your life and enjoying all the wonderful things it has to offer. It was my dream car, my first word... yet I had never even driven one. Why couldn't he see how important this was to me?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAfter his final 'NO', I swore to him that I would buy one before he did. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHe laughed at me. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe man I looked up to the most in my life, the one who taught me everything I knew about cars, laughed at me when I told him my dream.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI spent the next 5 years of my life with one single goal: To prove him wrong. I worked like I never had before, day and night, multiple jobs just to save up money and make my dream a reality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn my 23rd birthday, I flew up to Sacramento and picked up my first Corvette. I called him that night as I was driving down the PCH, leaving a voicemail I wish I could hear today. \"Hey dad, just wanted you to know that I did what you said I couldn't.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAhhh... thats making me tear up as I write it. I love my dad, and I know he never meant to hurt me by laughing - if Sven had said that to me I probably would have done the same thing. The truth is, we often end up finding motivation where we least expect to - many times from people who have no idea how powerful their words really were.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy hope for this ZOX is that it reminds you to stay strong. There's no need to be upset at the people who doubt you - use their doubt as fuel to succeed. Don't just prove them wrong, blow their expectations out of the water to the point where you establish you are a force to be reckoned with. Now, where I grew up in Michigan is very blue collar, and football is all that matters for about half the school year. This makes sense as at the time, our varsity team was playing in the state championship every other year and the entire town would rally behind us. Understanding our fan base and having a love for work shirts (think the button down shirts a mechanic wears with their name patch on them), I reached out to a store downtown that sold excess work shirts, complete with random name patches on them, for pennies on the dollar. Using our school store's budget, I purchased as many as we could afford and took them to a printer. On the back of each shirt, I printed in bright yellow: \"Hudsonville Superfan. We may not be pretty but we get the job done.\"\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe day we got them back, I made a quick video with a few friends from class in which I played an average student who happened to walk past the school store when nobody was around. The store was pitch black with only one light on, a seemingly perfect ray of light cast down directly on a pile of these new work shirts. Face pressed to the glass, I tried the door. It was unlocked. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe next scene was shot in slow motion black and white using a huge fan from our gym - I was walking down the hallway with my Superfan work shirt on and people were coming out of their classes just staring in awe at my hair, blowing in the wind (that's right, my locks used to be wonderful). It faded to black and said something to the effect of the new superfan shirts releasing on Friday. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe next morning, the 'commercial' we made played on TV in every classroom in our school during the announcements. I thought the idea was awesome and it turns out everyone else did too - the first batch of shirts sold out to teachers, staff and the boosters before they even released. So we made more, and more, and more. To the point where nearly everyone in my town, at that time, had one of the shirts I had created. It was an incredible feeling I still get goosebumps thinking about, even to this day.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBut what does that have to do with failure, you ask? This is where the story gets good. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eDuring this crazy whirlwind of shirts in town, my friend's dad had asked to see me. Mr B had the biggest property (and home) in our neighborhood - he owned a very prominent ad agency that I had been interning at part time for school. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eWhen I met him at his home, he sat down and showed me a variety of layouts for a new branding campaign they were working on for his company. He said that after seeing my creativity with the Superfan shirts that he'd like me to come work for them and handle the creative direction myself.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eAfter picking my jaw up from the floor, I thanked him profusely for the offer and rushed home to tell my parents. I couldn't believe I had an offer from the best place in town and I was only in high school. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThat following workday, as I arrived to intern, I anxiously told the designers there what had happened. I, being incredibly naive, thought they'd love the fact that I didn't have to go to four years of college like they did in order to get a better job offer directly from the owner. The world was taking notice of my genius and nothing could stop me!\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eUntil I got back to class the next day. My teacher had gotten a call from the manager of the division I was interning at. He had spoken with the owner and told him after everything I had shared with the team yesterday, there was no way he could bring me on. It just wouldn't work as the rest of the team would be too upset. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was crushed. I had outperformed everyone, yet I lost. And 20 years later, I still remember how that pain felt.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eNow let's be real here - the failure was my own doing. I made a mistake that directly impacted my future. If I'm honest, I think I took it so personally that I ended high school on sort of a 'who cares' note - a place many of us go when we've just experienced the pain of failing, especially after trying so hard. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThis feeling is not exclusive to work either - nearly all of us know what it's like to have failed relationships, promises to ourselves we don't keep and an overall feeling of just not being good enough. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBut you know what? We're all still here. Failure didn't mean defeat, it just meant we had to figure out another way. Maybe that way hasn't shown itself yet, or maybe you're currently in a 'who cares' place like I was and you haven't bothered to look. No matter the circumstance, my hope for you with this beautiful ZOX is strikingly simple. And instead of creating novels, I found myself writing stories in a whole new way for this inspiring community. My life wasn’t up to some scriptwriter or film director.
