When I think about compliments I give others, I came to the realization that it is easy for me to tell someone I like their shoes or clothes. The sun was out, the birds were chirping, and the excitement was in the air of no school for the next three months. So far, it was looking like a good day. I had been confined to the four walls of my bedroom, studying for final exams, for what felt like months and now, I was just hours away from freedom. I sat down at my desk to take my last exam, quite nervous as this had been the hardest class in my college career thus far. Even though I had struggled throughout this course, I was optimistic that I was going to ace this final and make my comeback to earn the grade I deserved. As I answered the final questions of the test, I began to feel relieved. The test felt fairly easy, and I was thrilled to see my grade in just a few moments. That feeling of relief quickly developed into a much different feeling. Tears welled up in my eyes and a lump formed in my throat as I found out that I had failed the test. Not only had I failed the test, but that grade brought me down to a final grade in the class of a whopping D-. I had worked so hard all semester, only to finish the class with a failing grade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI was beside myself trying to figure out how this could have happened. After days of dwelling on it, I finally decided to let it go. There was no changing the past, the grade was determined, and all I could control at this point were my own actions and attitudes going forward. Even though I felt I had not deserved such a grade, I decided to take the situation and see the good in it. Yes, I had failed, but now I had even more drive to work harder in the next semester to raise my GPA again. To prove to myself, that one grade does not define me, and I can still achieve what I want to with the minor setback. At the end of the day, I would still end up graduating, I would still find a job, and although it may have felt like it, that grade was not the end of the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eWith each setback in life, we have two choices. The first being to label ourselves as failures, dwell on the negative, and let it define who we are. The second being that we can use that setback as a stepping stone to our comeback. We can choose to acknowledge that with every struggle, there is a lesson learned that helps us push forward and grow into an even better version of ourselves. We are not failures, our mistakes do not define us, and we are all capable of achieving greatness, no matter what challenges we face. I wasn’t thrown into a van but offered a ride by a “friend” of my friend from a party....which quickly went from a ride home to him trying to take me miles away from the campus into cow field territory. My anxiety rose as I began to understand what was happening. He started driving crazily, 100 mph, laughing around curves, almost crashing, threatening me along the way and asking if I was scared. He was enjoying terrorizing me and wouldn’t let me out. I had made my own error, I trusted someone I didn’t know well enough. At the time a I thought, this cannot be my end, this is not how my life story stops, with me on the news... gone forever. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo I made a choice in that moment, one I really didn’t even know I was capable of making, to fight for my life, in a car going 110mph. I attacked my kidnapper with every once of will, hitting him over and over because really what other choice was there? I fought for my life. I fought for my freedom. The car crashed, flipping 5 times in every direction. I was badly injured but alive. My kidnapper fled the scene but was found down the road later and after years of court battles justice prevailed and he was convicted on many counts. The last time I saw my kidnapper I was mad and charged at him in my wheel chair and guess what happened this time? He ran from me! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen I look back on this it amazes me because I feel stronger having gone through such a thing. It was a lesson to fight for myself and life because inevitably no one else could help me in this situation. I had to depend on myself and trust my decision. It boiled down to one thing my; sheer will to live and make it out of the situation alive. That alone was my one goal and I met it. No matter what life has thrown my way, I can look back now years later and see I have come out on the other side and appreciate what I learned, even if it wasn’t a lesson I wanted. It was a lesson I need to become who I am today. Now where I grew up in Michigan is very blue collar, and football is all that matters for about half the school year. This makes sense as at the time, our varsity team was playing in the state championship every other year and the entire town would rally behind us. Understanding our fan base and having a love for work shirts (think the button down shirts a mechanic wears with their name patch on them), I reached out to a store downtown that sold excess work shirts, complete with random name patches on them, for pennies on the dollar. Using our school store's budget, I purchased as many as we could afford and took them to a printer. On the back of each shirt, I printed in bright yellow: \"Hudsonville Superfan. We may not be pretty but we get the job done.\"\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe day we got them back, I made a quick video with a few friends from class in which I played an average student who happened to walk past the school store when nobody was around. The store was pitch black with only one light on, a seemingly perfect ray of light cast down directly on a pile of these new work shirts. Face pressed to the glass, I tried the door. It was unlocked. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe next scene was shot in slow motion black and white using a huge fan from our gym - I was walking down the hallway with my Superfan work shirt on and people were coming out of their classes just staring in awe at my hair, blowing in the wind (that's right, my locks used to be wonderful). It faded to black and said something to the effect of the new superfan shirts releasing on Friday. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe next morning, the 'commercial' we made played on TV in every classroom in our school during the announcements. I thought the idea was awesome and it turns out everyone else did too - the first batch of shirts sold out to teachers, staff and the boosters before they even released. So we made more, and more, and more. To the point where nearly everyone in my town, at that time, had one of the shirts I had created. It was an incredible feeling I still get goosebumps thinking about, even to this day.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBut what does that have to do with failure, you ask? This is where the story gets good. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eDuring this crazy whirlwind of shirts in town, my friend's dad had asked to see me. Mr B had the biggest property (and home) in our neighborhood - he owned a very prominent ad agency that I had been interning at part time for school. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eWhen I met him at his home, he sat down and showed me a variety of layouts for a new branding campaign they were working on for his company. He said that after seeing my creativity with the Superfan shirts that he'd like me to come work for them and handle the creative direction myself.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eAfter picking my jaw up from the floor, I thanked him profusely for the offer and rushed home to tell my parents. I couldn't believe I had an offer from the best place in town and I was only in high school. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThat following workday, as I arrived to intern, I anxiously told the designers there what had happened. I, being incredibly naive, thought they'd love the fact that I didn't have to go to four years of college like they did in order to get a better job offer directly from the owner. The world was taking notice of my genius and nothing could stop me!\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eUntil I got back to class the next day. My teacher had gotten a call from the manager of the division I was interning at. He had spoken with the owner and told him after everything I had shared with the team yesterday, there was no way he could bring me on. It just wouldn't work as the rest of the team would be too upset. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was crushed. I had outperformed everyone, yet I lost. And 20 years later, I still remember how that pain felt.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eNow let's be real here - the failure was my own doing. I made a mistake that directly impacted my future. If I'm honest, I think I took it so personally that I ended high school on sort of a 'who cares' note - a place many of us go when we've just experienced the pain of failing, especially after trying so hard. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThis feeling is not exclusive to work either - nearly all of us know what it's like to have failed relationships, promises to ourselves we don't keep and an overall feeling of just not being good enough. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBut you know what? It's that little hug for your wrist that tells you to get your mind back on track and focus on what's right instead of what's wrong. Many of us set new year's resolutions right around this time every year. It's a fresh slate, a good way to start over with a goal we didn't quite hit the year before. But what if, instead of only looking at the things we want to change, we take a moment to give ourselves a little credit for the wonderful human being we already are? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI always say there's a big difference between complacent and content. Complacence is lazy - you're a bump on a log as my mom would say, and you can't be bothered to do much. Complacent is bad. Content, on the other hand, is what this little reminder is all about. Content is being grateful for where you are and what you have right here, right now. Sometimes, the key to being content is just giving our own brains a little TLC every now and then by remembering how far we've come. It's good to congratulate yourself, it's good to be happy about your accomplishments. Just because it's a new year doesn't mean we need to label everything that happened in the past as 'not good enough.' \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI think my fear is that the new year always has us focusing on what comes next without ever taking a moment to reflect on all we've made it through already. However, things changed when we got to our destination for class: London. Within 48 hours of arriving, one of the girls had already spread rumors about the other five of us. She ignored us in our flat, on field trips, and in class.
