Saying \"I LOVE PIZZA!\" but then telling your 2-year old you love them too is a bit hard for them to understand - are they only as important to you as your pizza? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs funny as it sounds, it wasn't until this actually happened to me that I realized how important it was to tell others we love them. On a daily basis, I'll ask Sven \"Did you know daddy loves you?\" His response of \"yeah I know\" stayed the same until just a few days ago. We were driving home and his response was a bit different: \"What does that mean? What is love?\" \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI explained to him that love means you care about someone very very much - they're on your mind in your heart. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI looked in the rearview mirror as I was telling him this. His response was one I'll never forget. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"I love\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eyou\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edad.\" \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNow this isn't the first time he's said that to me, but it was the first time he said it knowing what it really meant. My heart was officially melting. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat's what this ZOX is all about: It's helping to define what love is before reminding someone how much you care. For some of you, it's a conversation you've never had - that's a serious gift for someone who really needs to hear it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor me, I've realized that it only was only after I defined what love is that it helped show Sven just how important he was to me. If you didn't know, Oma means grandmother in German. Although I called her by a German name because that was the heritage of my grandfather, she was very much Italian. She was loud, outspoken, and let everyone know exactly what she was thinking. She loved to cook and I never left her home hungry. Being the youngest of all the grandchildren, I would be lying if I said I didn't get some special treatment. She loved me with every ounce of her being. When I was little, I remember the countless hours she would play Barbie dolls with me, read me bedtime stories when I would spend the night, and always hold me in her arms as we rocked in the big green rocking chair in her family room. There is something so special about being a little kid and spending time with your grandparents. Over the years, I grew up, but she stayed the same silly, loving Oma that I adored and would even try to fit me in her lap even though I had far surpassed the age and size of being able to rock in that rocking chair with her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe summer before the 8th grade was one of the hardest I had experienced. After fighting breast cancer as best as she could and enduring chemotherapy, the doctors shared with our family that they didn't believe my Oma would make it much longer. Cousins, aunts, uncles, and relatives all gathered around her during this time. We stood by her on the good days and reminisced about all the great times we’ve had and we stood by her on the hard days when did everything we could to comfort her. It’s heartbreaking to see how cancer can transform someone into a completely different person. Her beautiful brown, curly hair, was now gone. The lively Oma, who used to sing and dance in the kitchen, now lay still in her bed, too weak to move on her own. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn July of that summer, she took her last breath. When you’re young, sometimes it can be hard to understand these situations. All I felt was pain and sadness and confusion as to why I didn't get to grow up with her in my life. It is hard to look past our own grievances in times of hurt, but as I grew up I looked at the situation from her perspective. I realized how strong she was. How during that time she was in an incredible amount of pain, yet never complained. How she must have been fearful to leave her own family, yet never wept. How her identity was stripped from her and not once did she take pity on herself. Through the hardest time in her life she was her strongest and her beauty shone the brightest. Although breast cancer was the last chapter of her story, it did not define her. She did not allow it to drive out all the light and love she experienced throughout her life. Over the 8 years he battled Alzheimer's, I watched as he went from forgetful to not being able to speak at all. He could no longer recognize close family and friends or turn his thoughts into sentences, besides the occasional sound or word. It was agonizing witnessing this happen to him so slowly and having absolutely no chance at stopping it. I have always resented this disease as it hurt that the rest of my family had memories of what he was like without it, yet I never would. They would tell me that he was a kind man, who cared for others and loved me so much, yet I yearned to experience that for myself. I wanted to be able to hear about his life, his childhood, his stories. I wanted to make him proud as I grew up and have him involved in all the major milestones in my life. There was so much more to my story with him that I never got the chance to experience. Towards the end of his life, things began to take a turn for the worse, and we knew it was time to say our goodbyes. As I walked into his room for what would be the last time, I was greeted by the sweetest words of “hi honey” ever so clearly, the most I had heard him speak in while. Those were his last words before he passed away, coincidentally the day before my birthday. To me, those two words were exactly what I needed and he knew that. I may not have other memories of my time with him when he was well, but even in the final moments of his fight, he left me with a sign to remind me of his love for me, that he knew me, even if his brain did not remember, his heart most certainly did.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI only hope that one day, there will be no more pain brought on by this disease and a cure can be found. If you or a loved one has been directly or indirectly affected by Alzheimer's my heart truly feels for you. I have known the pain, and I am deeply sorry. Just know that although their mind and body may change, their heart remains the same and their love for you has not ever wavered. She paused, her eyes softened as she reflected on my question, then said, “They are my everything - it's the best way to describe the love that I feel for them.” The question itself made her smile, just thinking about how much she loved her children and the sunshine they bring into her life too.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe song has carried on through decades still, with the same sentiment of the indescribable love parents feel for their children. At times it still happens but I always try to remind myself it’s not doing any good to worry because nothing productive is ever accomplished with worry.  I had a bad mindset that only contributed to depression by focusing on the negative.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eLife isn’t always easy but if we are choosing to learn from hard times we allow ourselves to consciously make the decision to forgive others and focus on the many things that bring us joy.  Forgiveness takes the weight of worry off of your shoulders. It doesn't mean what happened was right or that we have to forget, it simply means you have decided to choose Joy over, worry, anxiety, stress and negativity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBecause in the end you are taking control of your life and enjoying all the wonderful things it has to offer. Even now, I still have self-doubt from time to time. I still overthink things and question my own abilities. Though through all those challenges I've faced, I've found happiness. It was my dream car, my first word... yet I had never even driven one. Why couldn't he see how important this was to me?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAfter his final 'NO', I swore to him that I would buy one before he did. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHe laughed at me. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe man I looked up to the most in my life, the one who taught me everything I knew about cars, laughed at me when I told him my dream.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI spent the next 5 years of my life with one single goal: To prove him wrong. I worked like I never had before, day and night, multiple jobs just to save up money and make my dream a reality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn my 23rd birthday, I flew up to Sacramento and picked up my first Corvette. I called him that night as I was driving down the PCH, leaving a voicemail I wish I could hear today. \"Hey dad, just wanted you to know that I did what you said I couldn't.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAhhh... thats making me tear up as I write it. I love my dad, and I know he never meant to hurt me by laughing - if Sven had said that to me I probably would have done the same thing.
