WWJD Bracelet and WWJD Wristband

WWJD Bracelet

What Would Jesus Do?

For those of us who aim to live like Jesus would, this is the ultimate reminder.

Christ lived a life that we can all strive to emulate: A life full of love to those he encountered.

What better daily reminder is there than to live more like Christ?

Our WWJD bracelet is one we've been wanting to make for the last 12 years, and it's finally here. With over 9,000,000 ZOX sold since 2011, this is our favorite wristband we've made.

For my brothers and I, WWJD goes back to our childhood. When we were kids, our parents let us collect different colored versions of the bracelets from our Church's gift shop. If you saw me as a kid, you'd see me wearing several of them at any given time.

For years, we thought that WWJD was just a local thing for us. The bracelets first started at local youth groups just a short drive from where we grew up in Hudsonville, Michigan. Within a few years, it seemed like everyone in our area had a small collection of WWJD bracelets. More than any other accessory, the WWJD bracelet is one of our fondest childhood memories.

Since starting ZOX back in 2011, we've always discussed whether or not we should create a ZOX with this message. After years of going back and forth, we finally settled on a design we think you'll love along with a message that Christians will love.

The phrase "What Would Jesus Do?" abbreviated as WWJD, has significantly impacted Christian culture and beyond, serving as a moral compass and a reminder of Christian ideals. Its origins can be traced back to the 19th century, popularized through the works of Rev. Charles Sheldon, particularly his book "In His Steps," published in 1896. Sheldon's novel portrayed characters facing moral dilemmas and choosing actions reflecting Jesus's teachings, thus coining the phrase to inspire living by Christian values in everyday situations.

The phrase also has roots in the Social Gospel Movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which aimed to apply Christian ethics to social problems like poverty and inequality. Leaders like Washington Gladden and Walter Rauschenbusch were prominent figures in this movement, emphasizing the need for social reform and morality in public life, with the example of Jesus at the center.

By the 1990s, WWJD evolved beyond its literary and theological origins into a mainstream cultural phenomenon, especially among Christian youth. Janie Tinklenberg, a youth leader, played a crucial role in this transition by creating WWJD bracelets to serve as daily reminders for young Christians to reflect on their choices in light of Jesus's teachings. The movement spawned a wide array of merchandise, from jewelry to apparel, embedding the phrase in popular culture and sparking conversations about living a life that mirrors Christ's compassion, kindness, and moral integrity.

While the WWJD merchandise became a symbol of faith and a tool for promoting Christian values, it also faced criticism. Some Christian leaders argued that wearing WWJD items without genuine spiritual commitment could lead to superficial displays of faith, contrary to biblical teachings against public piety for its own sake. The trend also raised ethical concerns regarding the production of merchandise in overseas sweatshops.

Despite these criticisms, the core message of WWJD — to live in a manner consistent with Jesus's teachings and to make choices reflecting His love and compassion — remains relevant. The phrase encourages believers to pause and consider their actions, fostering a deeper connection with their faith and a commitment to embodying Christ's teachings in their daily lives.
