Story

Happy New Year, fam!! 🎊✨

We're so close to having our first week of 2022 complete! Time has already begun to fly. With the new year comes new Spotlight releases, and today is one I've seen requested for a while – Celebrate the Spectrum.

The card text for this one reads: "my differences make me, me."

I can't get over how beautiful that is. It's not uncommon to get down on ourselves for being, feeling, looking, or acting differently from those around us. But, unfortunately, we tend to forget that our differences are usually the best things about us. While we all have a plethora of incredible qualities, being "different" is one of the more exciting qualities.

Growing up, differences tend to be labeled as "weird" or "strange," but after we all experience life a bit, I think we start to realize how great it is to be diverse. Do you know the phrase "opposites attract"? Sure, we like to be around people with common interests, but we also benefit from spending time with those who contribute to our lives in ways that we're not used to.

It's never something we should be uncomfortable with, and it shouldn't be something we fixate on, either.

Celebrating Differences

Be proud of your differences. After all, they're what make us unique, wonderful individuals – those this world thrives on.

So, that being said, here are a few helpful ways to celebrate everyone's differences every day:

  1. Be mindful of differencesMindfulness is "is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us." When we apply this mindset to interactions with our peers, we're able to fully pay attention to who they are, what they're like, and what they're saying or doing. It's more than just respect – it's being there for those around you.
  2. Learn from others – Listening also means perceiving, processing, and putting into action (for my math-loving friends, L = P³). It's one thing to hear someone when they confide in you about what they like, what they don't, and how they need things to be; it's another to actually let it change how you operate to be accomodating and loving towards them.
  3. Approach situations without judgment"Being open to changing our approach is fundamental to developing something meaningful. It takes time and it evolves. And that is what makes it so exciting.” -Dr. Lunksy
  4. Be willing to communicate – Communication is important in all relationships! Showing someone that you're willing to talk to them about any and everything is important for a trusting, loving, and mutually beneficial connection.

It doesn't have to be a big show of "Congratulations, you're different!" Instead, it can happen in little ways every day to emphasize reverence, kindness, support, and encouragement.

Everyone is different. It's just a fact. Please don't shy away from learning more about someone's differences to further a friendship or relationship with them. Learning is how we can be more considerate of those around us, no matter who they are.

With that being said, I hope this vibrant, beautiful Spotlight Single helps you cherish every atom of your being that makes you different from others. Celebrate them, love them, and don't you dare be afraid of flaunting them.

Be bold,

Landri
