I’ve been covering war & conflict for nearly two decades. It is a rolodex of memories, the most prominent of them are freeze-frame moments of what war does to the most innocent, how it robs them of that spark of joy children should have, and so much more.
But this is not that story. This is the story of how we change that—how we help heal the physical and psychological wounds and ease the pain of those visible and invisible scars. It is the story of how a child who receives treatment and support is no longer bullied or is better equipped to handle it, gains confidence, excels at school, smiles, and emerges from the shadows of an invisible prison. By eradicating the barricades erected by war-related injuries (both physical and psychological), we give a child their agency back. Their story is no longer imposed on them, but instead, it is transformed into one they can write on their own.
