Some relationships require no translation. You come in the door and something about your face has already been read and understood, and whatever happened today does not need to be explained, summarized or justified before the comfort arrives.
It happens in small, unremarkable ways. The sitting down beside you when nobody asked. The head on your knee at exactly the point in the evening when it helps. The following you from room to room for no stated reason beyond preferring you nearby.
What a dog offers is not insight. It is attention without agenda. No follow up questions, no advice you did not ask for, no quiet assessment of whether you handled things well. Just steady presence and the clear position that you are the best thing to have walked through that door all day.
That is a rare thing to be given, and most of us have gone long stretches without it from anybody. It is worth noticing when you have it, and worth understanding that the reason it feels so good is that being accepted without performance is what everybody actually wants and almost nobody asks for directly.
You are allowed to want that from people too. Not just from the dog.
